What the Kardashians Have Done for the World of Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Medicine

The Kardashians and the Jenners have been in the spot light for quite some time.  Some people love them and others might find them….well, let’s just say not everyone is a fan.   Regardless of how you feel about them, you have to admit the Kardashians/Jenners have an effect on society.  They are known as trend setters and have taken on a variety of controversial issues.   Even in the world of Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Medicine (MIAM), once a taboo topic to discuss with friends has now become more socially acceptable.

​Minimally invasive aesthetic treatments such as the injection of neuromodulators like Botox® and dermal fillers like Juvderm Ultra Plus® have been around for a while but it was pretty “hush-hush” and many did not want to admit to getting anything done.  The day the Kardashian-Jenner Klan started openly talking about their procedures, a new world of conversation opened up.

       Conversations include a variety of topics- everything from getting different injectable and laser treatments to aging more elegantly to augmentation.  Platelet Rich Plasma aka “The Vampire Facial” gained cosmetic popularity once Kim Kardashian posted that famous picture of her face covered in a little blood.  And there was a huge surge in lip augmentation when Kylie Jenner showed off her new pout a few years back.

Things have definitely changed.  From once being a secret to now people posting their treatments on social media outlets such as Instagram, MIAM has definitely grown and continues to develop.  For example, Platelet Rich Fibrin is the next generation of Platelet Rich Plasma and is shown to provide a superior treatment.  This is due to a continuous and stable amount of growth factors being released over a longer period of time (Kobayashi et al., 2014).  Dermal fillers are being changed via molecular weight and via cross-linking to provide a better selection to achieve a desired result. It is the interest in the field that drives such development.  And let’s face it, the Kardashians and Jenners have helped drive this interest.
