5 Common Types of Wrinkles and How to Treat Them

Wrinkles are a part of aging.  And usually when one thinks of wrinkles, they typically think of them as either dynamic or static.  Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that appear as the face moves usually due to emotions.  For example, wrinkles around the eyes often affectionately referred to as the crow’s feet are created when one smiles.  Static wrinkles are the lines that remain on the face even after our facial muscles relax.  These often deepen with time.  But let us get more specific.  Let us dive deeper and discuss the five main types of wrinkles: gravitational folds, atrophic crinkling rhytids, permanent elastic creases, dynamic expression lines, and compression wrinkles.

Gravitational Folds
As the name implies, gravitational folds are a result of well, gravity.  They occur naturally with age as our structural integrity becomes compromised and the skin thus begins to sag and fold.  As we age, bone loss occurs and fat pads thin. This can be further affected by the thickness of the skin.  When skin is thinner, it shows more gravitational folds.  When skin is thicker and plumper, there are fewer gravitational folds.  What can be done?
Optimizing bone health is important.  Calcium, Vitamin D, exercise, and even dental hygiene are important.  And then there are some minimally invasive aesthetic options that may also help.  Dermal fillers such as Voluma, collagen stimulators such as Sculptra, and PDO threads can be used to help treat these types of wrinkles.  As great as these options are, they do not actually replace bone.  To date, there is no exact way to grow lost facial bone.
Another option for treatment of these types of wrinkles is surgery.  It could be in the form of an implant or a face lift.

Atrophic Crinkling Rhytids
Atrophic wrinkles are fine lines that appear parallel and can be found on the face and body.  They ultimately appear due to loss of collagen structure and severe thinning of the skin that is normal with the aging process.  It is further exacerbated by overexposure to the sun.  These are one of the most difficult types of wrinkles to correct.  However, a hydrating skincare regimen with a good antioxidant like Vitamin C could help.  Another procedure that is helpful is microneedling.  Microneedling starts the process of neocollogenesis which means your body will grow new collagen.

Permanent Elastic Wrinkles
These wrinkles are often attributed to the sun.  They primarily occur in the upper body most commonly the upper lip, cheeks, and the base of the neck.  Once again microneedling is a great way to treat these types of wrinkles as microneedling not only grows new collagen but it is one of the few treatments that also grows new elastin.  And sunscreen (more specifically physical sunscreen) is a great way to prevent these types of wrinkles.

Dynamic Expression Lines
These are lines caused by routine expressions such as smiling, laughing, frowning, and even pursing your lips around a straw.  Overtime the muscles start to break down and the skin becomes less elastic.   It can be hard to avoid these types of lines but neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport (these are just two of four neuromodulator choices in the U.S.) can help reduce the appearance of them.  Neuromodulators are injected into the muscle affecting the contraction of the muscle.  This type of treatment is recommended to be done every 3 months for optimal results.

Compression Wrinkles
Compression wrinkles are the most recent addition to the categorization of wrinkles.  These wrinkles are the lines you get when you compress your skin against something such as your pillow while sleeping.  Another method of getting these types of wrinkles is compressing your face against your hand.  To prevent these types of wrinkles is to be mindful of what you are doing that is causing them and trying not to do that action.  In the case of sleeping, it is recommended to sleep on your back.  For those that have a hard time training themselves to sleep on their back, there are pillows out there that claim to help prevent these types of wrinkles.  However, if you have changed your habit and currently have them, microneedling can help treat them.

As from everything you read above, there are several ways to treat these types of wrinkles depending on the type of wrinkle is it.  Injectables, such as botox, dermal filler, and sculptra can be helpful as well as microneedling.

Skincare can also be effective in preventing and treating wrinkles.  As I am sure you noticed, aging skin requires more moisture.
If you are looking for a way to plump up the skin without injectables, there are a few products that you can try.  Hyaluronic Acid is able to hold 1,000 times its weight in water and can give the skin the moisture it needs to fight the formation of wrinkles after they have formed.  Our Hydrating Hyaluronic Serum contains multiple forms of hyaluronic acid to not only hydrate your skin but also train if to hydrate itself.  It also promotes skin cell regeneration.

Another powerhouse skincare ingredient is Polyglutamic Acid.  Polyglutamic Acid holds even more moisture than Hyaluronic Acid and helps maintain healthy hydration levels.  It also supports your skin’s natural exfoliation process resulting in minimized pigmentation.  Our Illuminating Hydropeptide serum contains Polyglutamic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid, and Acetyl Hexapeptide-8.  Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 works to cross-link the skin’s elastin and add firmness.

A good moisturizer that can replenish lost moisture is great.  You want to look for something non-comedogenic meaning it will not cause pimples.  Our Restructuring Biotherapy Cream contains Squalane and Acetyl Hexapeptid-8.  Squalane is something that mimics your body’s own natural oil production therefore it controls oil production, soothes skin while preventing irritation, and is very moisturizing but light weight.

Vitamin C Serum is a great antioxidant that can help with pigmentation and boost collagen production.  One thing to keep in mind: Not all Vitamin C serums are created equal and most are not stable.  When looking at Vitamin C ingredients, you want to look for “magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.”  This is a stable form of Vitamin C serum that will provide results and is found in our Brightening Vitamin C along with the ingredient Niacinamide.  Niacinamide helps minimize pores, reduce redness (great for rosacea) and helps build keratin, a type of protein that keeps your skin firm and healthy.

And probably the best anti-aging product anyone can use is Sunscreen.  But ideally physical sunscreen is preferred.  Therefore, you want to look for Titanium Dioxide and/or Zinc Oxide under active ingredients.  Physical sunscreen has come a long way since the days of Baywatch with the thick white sunscreen on the nose. You can find great physical sunscreens that are lightweight and go on clear.  Sunscreen helps prevent skin damage and premature aging.  Did you know that the sun’s UV rays heat up the skin and break down the elastin naturally found in your skin?  This makes you even more susceptible for fine lines and wrinkles.  So reach for a good quality physical sunscreen which can come in a variety of forms:  Cream (Try our Clear Perfection or Tinted Perfection), powder (Try our Powder Me Protected), and a stick (Try our Glide on Perfection).  Extra bonus for those who do not care for the smell of sunscreen- our Glide on Perfection has a nice vanilla scent.

Your skin is going to age with you, but regardless of what kind of wrinkles you have there are several treatments to help prevent and refresh.  But even these treatments need the support of a strong skincare routine.  So, wear SPF, limit sun exposure, and give your skin everything it needs to keep it hydrated, strong, and protected.

It is important to trust the hands you are in and go to someone who will not only take their time but also who truly cares about you.  If you would like a treatment with Dr. Sam, please call or text Ananya Aesthetics at 213-290-1380 to book an appointment.
