The use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a treatment is technically nothing new... It has been popular in Europe for years and is recently gaining popularity in the United States. But what are the benefits and how does it work?
Here's a list of just some of the benefits carbon dioxide has on the skin: -Increased blood flow -Increased Oxygen -Increased Hydration (up to 117% in just one application) -Lightens dark under eye circles -Increase in growth factors -Faster Healing -Decrease in fine lines and wrinkles -Decreased Inflammation -Decreased Redness/ appearance in rosacea -Decreased hyperpigmentation Clearly it has the ability to do a lot. But how is this possible? Well, I am going to get a little nerdy on you and bring you back to your high school science class. But one thing to know first: Your skin technically does not like CO2. I know what you are thinking- if my skin does not like CO2, then why would I want it near or dare I say- in my skin? Well listen up beauty- here is the break down. When CO2 is administered to the skin, all of those benefits are achieved through the bohr effect. The bohr effect is basically where the body senses that there is a shift from oxygen to an increase in carbon dioxide which then makes the body go into action! It expands the blood vessels (and even grows new ones) improving blood flow in order to supply the area that has the CO2 with an increase in oxygen. And with the increase of oxygen and blood flow comes other micro nutrients such and growth factors. And more oxygen leads to an increase in moisture to the cells, promotes healing, and decreases inflammation (inflammation is assoicated with hypoxia [decreased oxygen]).The Bohr effect is the perfect example to showcase how our bodies are able to adapt. Remarkable, right!?! And that beauties is how with a little CO2, we can acheive all of the benefits listed above! CO2 can be delivered via two mechanisms: Subcutaneously via injection (ouch!) and a transcutaneous gel mask. So which works better? The short answer: neither works "better!" There was a study done comparing the two delivery mechanisms, and it was found "use of this transcutaneous CO2 gel produced changes in the dermis similar to those observed with subcutaneous injection of CO2 ," (Leibascholl, G. H., Coll, L., and Roberts, W., 2018). Now enter CO2 Lift PRO by Lumisque Skincare. CO2 Lift PRO is a medical-grade product that hanesses the natural powers and benefits of carbon dioxide to tighten, lift, and rejuvenate the skin. This mask can be done in office after a procedure such as microneedling or in the privacy of your own home. And it is the perfect first step before any big event, or as a regular routine to give yourself that extra dose of natural glow and mega moisture! So the next time your skin is looking dull or angry, reach for a mask, and glow on! Reference: Leibascholl, G. H., Coll, L., and Roberts, W. (2018).
